A Big Weekend for Events

This weekend is set to be one of the biggest of the year, with not one but three major events taking over the Capricorn Coast.

One of our most prestige events, the Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race, now in its ninth year, sails into Keppel Bay this weekend.  The 348 nautical mile race is the signature offshore yachting event for the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and has attracted boats as high profile as Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats XI, the current race record holder.  After wending their way up the Queensland coastline from Manly, the crews will be met by the annual Keppel Bay Marina party on Saturday and the Finish Line Festival Family Day on Sunday.  With market stalls, Heli-Central joy flights, free jumping castle and face painting for the kids and live entertainment, the Family Day is a highlight of the weekend.  When combined with the Waterline’s fantastic menu, cold drinks and stunning location, there is simply no better way to wind up your weekend than at Keppel Bay Marina.

The inaugural JRT / Tropical Auto Group Southern Great Barrier Reef Golf Championship commences at the Yeppoon Golf Club today and will attract leading professional golfers from across Australia and New Zealand who will be competing for a considerable prize purse to further their careers.  As well, local and national amateurs will try their handicaps alongside the pros, competing for a prize pool of their own.  There is something for everyone at the event – watch the golf or take part in the social functions being held across the four days.

Wednesday 29 July – Saturday 1 August
Yeppoon Golf Course, Yeppoon Rd, Yeppoon

Another inaugural event we’re delighted to welcome is the home-grown and very popular Yeppoon Triathlon Festival.  The event is a spectator’s paradise that will test the best of the national athlete pool.  Saturday afternoon is the Open Water Swimming Race and the fast and the furious Criterium Cycling race along the beachfront.  There are plenty of family-friendly events and free live entertainment into the evening, so grab a meal in the town centre and enjoy the atmosphere.  The major triathlon s are held on Sunday morning with an Olympic Distance event and a Sprint Distance event with a $5,500 prize purse for the open male & female categories.  So, whether you’re taking athletically inclined or more spectator-ly inclined, head to the beachfront this weekend.
