Robert Sobyra, Director of Evidence, Data & Innovation, Construction Skills Queensland

As part of the 2019 Capricorn Enterprise Major Projects Forum, we were privileged to welcome Robert Sobyra, Director of Evidence, Data & Innovation from Construction Skills Queensland.

Robert Sobyra is the Director of Evidence, Data and Innovation with Construction Skills Queensland. Responsible for driving CSQ’s research agenda, Robert is a leading thinker at the intersection of construction and skills. He writes and talks regularly on all things construction and workforce. Robert has a special interest in the future of work, skills and training.

Robert provided an economic overview of Australia before zeroing in on our region. Overall, our nation has seen less discretionary spending, less business investment and less private building activity than is necessary to support a growing economy. During times like this, economists consider that more government consumption and public infrastructure development are needed to kick start the economy.

By collating knowledge around the major projects, CSQ has identified the construction, residential, commercial and engineering outlook for the Central region with a labour shortage developing. Future demand for trades is high however apprentice training and intake rates across the region have been decreasing and are lower than the projected demand.

Capricorn Enterprise has been working closely with CSQ to assist industry to understand the importance of forward business planning and workforce management, growth and development.
