Join Team Turtle CQ and help protect marine turtle nests
Posted on August 24th, 2021
Livingstone Shire Council has been working with other Government agencies, stakeholders and volunteers to protect marine turtle nests on Capricorn Coast beaches over the past four years. This program has led to many successful hatchings, however some nests are still being predated by foxes.
In order to prevent this from happening, Council along with other stakeholders, will be conducting a fox trapping program in dunal areas behind local beaches during the week beginning 23rd of August 2021.
To help us protect this seasons turtle hatchlings, please:
- refrain from using Beach Access Tracks marked with signs warning of soft fox foothold trapping;
- do not use any unsigned Beach Access Track;
- stay out of the dunal vegetation area between Beach Accesses marked with trapping warning signs;
- keep domestic animals including dogs and cats under control at all times;
Your cooperation is appreciated and you will be assisting to protect a threatened species. Should you have any questions or are interested to find out more regarding pest management please contact Livingstone Shire Council on 07 4913 5000 or if you would like to join Team Turtle CQ volunteers visit the Fitzroy Basin Association Website.
Community volunteers are trained through a series of workshops to positively identify marine turtle tracks on beaches throughout the nesting and hatching season (November – January).
