Capricorn Caves set to beam during the Summer Solstice
Posted on December 6th, 2022
December is that incredibly exciting time of the year when life is a blur, and the rush of the festive season certainly catches us up. However, at the iconic Capricorn Caves, just 23 kilometres from the city of Rockhampton, it is also the perfect time of year to experience and enjoy a moment where time seemingly stands still.
The Summer Solstice, occurring in December, is when the sun reaches its maximum declination, marking the longest days of the year. The celebrated event is a global observance and at the ancient above-ground limestone cave system discovered in 1881, there is certainly no exception.
The Capricorn Caves sits proudly within a destination that lies on the Tropic of Capricorn, aligning with the southernmost latitude of the sun’s journey. During Summer Solstice, the midday light finds a natural opening in the ceiling of one of the Caves producing a powerful and concentrated beam of sunlight.
Capricorn Caves are offering visitors the opportunity to witness this amazing natural phenomenon on their daily tours commencing in December and Operations Manager Mindy Bambrick is looking forward to sharing the magic of solstice with everyone.
“As the only place in the Southern hemisphere where something like this occurs naturally, we have visitors coming from around the world to experience the beautiful sunlight that lights up our Belfry Cave,” Mindy said.
“In the past, we have had people coming to perform little ceremonies, recharge their crystals, proclaim their love to their partners with a kiss (or even a proposal!) and we have even hosted a summer Solstice wedding under the ‘light of eternity’.”
During the tour, expert guides will share information about what guests are seeing, the science behind the spectacle, stories of solstice celebrations from around the world, and thrill guests of all ages with a dazzling light show.
“The Summer Solstice at Capricorn Caves is a truly unique, unforgettable and one-of-a-kind experience and photo opportunity not to be missed,” Mindy said.
Early bookings are essential to avoid disappointment. Summer Solstice is offered in conjunction with the 11am Cathedral Cave Tour from 12 December – 15 January.
