Posted on April 1st, 2025
Capricorn Coast Marine Community is a small nonprofit organization dedicated to building a Turtle Rehabilitation Center at Causeway Lake on the Capricorn Coast. Their mission is to work alongside both state and local governments and the wider community to provide a safe, educational space for marine life conservation.

The center will serve as a home for marine volunteers and offer a dedicated space for turtle stranding and rehabilitation, allowing us to increase the capacity for care. By engaging with local schools, the public, and visitors, it aims to foster a greater understanding of marine conservation and the importance of turtle preservation.
Key features include:
- Education programs for all Queensland schools, allowing students to visit and learn.
- Public access for educational tours and turtle observation.
- A controlled environment to ensure turtle safety during their rehabilitation and eventual release.
- Community education on the dangers of marine debris, fishing lines, and boat strikes, including how to report stranded or injured turtles and how to help protect marine wildlife.
Future Vision: Their long-term vision is to expand the center’s impact by partnering with universities such as James Cook University (JCU) and Central Queensland University (CQU) for cutting-edge marine research along the Capricorn Coast. This partnership will also create opportunities for marine and veterinary students to assist at the center on rotations, gaining hands-on experience in marine rehabilitation. Additionally, it aims to collaborate with the Keppel Bunker Group to further conservation efforts around the Southern Great Barrier Reef. By sharing this research and knowledge with the local community and visiting public, this project hopes to inspire more people to engage with marine conservation and contribute to the protection of our vital ecosystems.
Through this project, the aim is to increase community involvement and promote sustainable marine conservation practices for future generations.
