Southern Great Barrier Reef Golf Championship!

Yeppoon Golf Club to host event from Tuesday July 28 to Saturday August 1, 2015

After the recent announcement that the Mercure Capricorn Resort will not be hosting their annual Pro-Am Golf Classic in July (after 23 consecutive years), citing disruption due to refurbishment of the resort, Yeppoon Golf Club has come to the rescue in 2015!

Yeppoon Golf Club PGA Professional Graham Sheppard has announced they will take on the challenge of hosting a pro-am tournament to fill the gap left in the Qld PGA Sunshine Tour.

Graham Sheppard said “we are not replicating the Capricorn Resort Pro-Am by any means. This is a completely new and different event scheduled which will commence with a corporate sponsors day followed by four days of tournament golf. The 2015 Southern Great Barrier Reef Golf Championship will attract some of Australia’s leading tournament professionals and celebrities to feature in the social functions.”

The tournament will attract over 100 professionals and 250 amateurs over the five days and promises to be the highlight of the PGA Sunshine Tour Central Queensland swing.

Capricorn Enterprise chief executive Mary Carroll said “we faced a very real threat of losing this major annual event which injects $2 million into our local economy, to another destination, possibly never to have it return. I commend the Yeppoon Golf Club and PGA Professional Graham Sheppard for their amazing assistance and encourage sponsors to help support this most important annual event.”

Graham Sheppard said “The Capricorn Resort Tournament was a highly regarded event on the Pro-Am circuit and I am sure that the Yeppoon Golf Club will also host a fantastic event. I am disappointed in the loss of the Resort ProAm this year, but excited for the opportunity to showcase our beautiful golf course here at the Yeppoon Golf Club” .

PGA Tournament Coordinator Justin Maker said “the PGA is excited that the Yeppoon Golf Club have opted to utilise the week available in the Central Queensland series of Pro-Ams.”

Sponsors are still to be confirmed for the event which is expected to inject up to $2million dollars into the local economy and attract golfers from all states of Australia.
