Chase your dreams at the GKI Trail Run
Posted on July 9th, 2020
We all know that Great Keppel Island (GKI) located on the Southern Great Barrier Reef has a track record of being one of the most special places to spend your days…
Simply set one foot on this spectacular island paradise where the squeaky-clean sand slides between your toes and the clear ocean glistens before your eyes, and your worries and stresses will soon fade into the distance.
Most days on GKI, it’s difficult to muster up too much energy which is primarily what this ‘resting place’ is for, but on Sunday 26th July we are changing things up a little and inviting you to take part in Central Queensland’s most spectacular running event.
Hosted by local club-based Fitzroy Frogs Triathlon, the 2020 GKI Trail Run/Hike is an opportunity to discover the beauty of this 1454ha gem like never before.
The event course traverses all corners of the island and for those doing the full 27km, includes 8 beaches, sand dunes, woodland trails, spectacular lookouts and rocky outcrops. Lesser distances of 10, 15 or 20 km are also available and capture many of the island highlights.
Fitzroy Frogs President, Craig McCormack is thrilled to have this event back on the table following the COVID-19 pandemic and is encouraging the community to strap on your runners and explore some of the hidden beauties on offer… which are only accessible by foot.
“This event has something for everyone, of all ages and levels of ability,” Craig said. “I have been very impressed how individuals and families have responded to COVID by being active, which as a sporting organisation we fully encourage. We urge runners and walkers to maintain this momentum and register for the GKI Trail Run/Hike.”
Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll is excited to welcome this event back in 2020 and believes this is the perfect opportunity to come and explore the interior of this popular running and hiking destination.
“Whether you are local to the region or visiting on a holiday, the diverse environment of Great Keppel Island makes every step exciting and unpredictable,” Mary said.
“Winter months on the Tropic of Capricorn are the perfect time to don your comfortable shoes and start your adventures. Wherever your journey leads, exploring this landscape via foot is an ideal way to enjoy the views, nature and local attractions.”
