Rookwood Weir Construction Announcement

Capricorn Enterprise was pleased to be involved with the Official Announcement by the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy The Hon Dr Anthony Lynham on the successful contractors to build Rookwood Weir – McCosker Contractors/Lend Lease JV.

Federal and State government are equally funding the construction and the operation of the Rookwood Weir.

Capricorn Enterprise Regional Priority Project

The development of Rookwood Weir (Growing Central Queensland – Rookwood Weir/Agricultural Infrastructure to support the water infrastructure) has been a long-term Priority Initiative of Capricorn Enterprise, supporting all the associated studies and industry engagements by Ms Anne Stunzner and others under the Growing Central Queensland banner.

Recently released project timeframes for the construction of Rookwood Weir indice that actual construction commencement is due in March 2021 – with a final date of completion (commissioning) anticipated for early 2023.

The April 2020 release of the Statement of proposals states that Rookwood Weir will make available an additional source of water, predominantly for agriculture, in line with the Commonwealth Government funding requirements under the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund principles.

The weir will also support urban and industrial needs, both in terms of the security of existing supplies and opportunities for managing population growth and drought contingencies in Rockhampton, the Capricorn Coast communities and Gladstone.

Rookwood Weir was a key component of the Lower Fitzroy River Infrastructure Project (LFRIP), which was declared a Coordinated Project on 6 May 2011, with the Coordinator General’s Evaluation Report (December 2016) recommending that the project proceed subject to conditions. The LFRIP was initially conceived as an assessment of the raising of Eden Bann Weir and/or the construction of the new Rookwood Weir.

The construction of the Rookwood Weir has been determined to be the most effective method of gaining the requisite water yield and is now the focus of the project design and construction.
