Two Livingstone Shire Projects finalists in National Economic Development Awards

Livingstone Shire Council is pleased to announce that the Capricorn Coast Art Trail and Capricorn Coast Community Resource Recovery Centre have been named finalists in the National Economic Development Awards.

Mayor Andrew Ireland, Portfolio Holder of Economic Development, said Council was thrilled to once again be named as finalists in the awards this year, shining a spotlight on some of the brilliant projects undertaken in Livingstone.

“Livingstone Shire is a mecca for Street Art, having won numerous awards for our colourful contributions to the local landscape, and it only made sense to turn these creations into an economic driver for the region,” Mayor Ireland said.

“The Capricorn Coast Art Trail was created, incorporating existing public art with the addition of virtual reality to nine engaging murals.

“The art trail encourages self-drive tourism from Yeppoon to Keppel Sands and is an exciting addition to our tourism portfolio, increasing visitation and visitor spend.”

A finalist in the category of Economic Development – Sustainable Initiatives, Council’s Community Resource Recovery Centre has provided a significant solution to the Shire’s long-term landfill challenges, transforming the way Livingstone Shire residents reduce, reuse and recycle.

“In 2021, Council released its Strategy for the Management of Resource Recovery and Waste to 2030. The vision for this strategy was for Council to support the community to transition to a circular economy for better health, environmental and sustainability outcomes,” Mayor Ireland said.

“The waste strategy highlighted the importance of Resource Recovery as one of the key actions, and from this, the concept plan for a new Community Resource Recovery Centre (CRRC) at Yeppoon Landfill was created.

“Council successfully applied for funding from the Queensland Government’s Resource Recovery Industry Development Program, and work commenced on the project, officially opening in November 2022.”

Award winners will be announced at an Awards Gala during the National Economic Development Conference 2023 (NEDC23) on 23 August 2023 in Karratha, WA.
