Green Getaway: Over-50s Travel with Purpose on Queensland’s Capricorn Coast

Fun Over 50 Holidays recently delivered a refreshing new take on coastal touring with its all-inclusive Green Getaway to Great Keppel Island — an immersive itinerary designed exclusively for over-50s seeking not just relaxation, but meaningful connection, cultural engagement, and hands-on conservation.

A centrepiece of the journey was the 2-night stay on Great Keppel Island, a pristine gem just off Queensland’s Capricorn Coast, famed for its powdery white beaches, crystal-clear waters, and easy access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Guests enjoyed a tranquil glass-bottom boat tour with Freedom Fast Cats, offering front-row views of vibrant coral gardens and diverse marine life flourishing beneath the surface.

But beyond the spectacular scenery, Green Getaway allowed guests to actively contribute to the protection and preservation of these special places.

In a special sand dune rejuvenation project on Great Keppel Island, guests, Fun Over 50 Holidays crew, and island staff worked together to plant native vegetation sourced from a local nursery. The initiative helps stabilise vulnerable dune systems, reduce erosion, restore habitat for coastal wildlife, and enhance the island’s natural resilience to future environmental pressures. This hands-on activity not only contributed directly to the island’s long-term ecological health but also offered guests a rewarding sense of purpose and connection to the destination.

“Our Green Getaway experience is all about creating a balance between enjoyment and giving back,” said Toni Brennan, CEO of Fun Over 50 Holidays.

“Guests walk away having not only relaxed in a beautiful environment but also played an active role in supporting local communities, protecting fragile ecosystems, and gaining a deeper cultural understanding.”

Adding to the journey’s sense of purpose, guests also enjoyed a 2-night stay in Bundaberg where they participated in the exclusive Connect and Restore cultural experience in partnership with the Taribelang Bunda people. Through storytelling and education, travellers gained insight into the cultural significance of the Milbi (sea turtle) and the deep connection Traditional Owners hold with the coastal environment.

Guests also visited Monsoon Aquatics to learn about coral propagation and saving the Great Barrier Reef. Fun Over 50 Holidays donated $2000 to this cause in front of guests during their visit.

“This program demonstrates what regenerative travel can achieve,” said Mary Carroll, CEO of Capricorn Enterprise.

“By combining reef discovery, Indigenous-led experiences, and environmental restoration, Fun Over 50 Holidays has created an inspiring model for tourism that is responsible, meaningful, and community-driven.”

From coral reefs to cultural stories, sand dune restoration to tropical beaches, Green Getaway delivered an enriching holiday experience that allowed over-50s to relax, reconnect, and make a difference — leaving Queensland’s coastline even more beautiful for future generations.
