From Hogwarts to Rockhampton: The magical story behind a famous steam train

Harry Potter fans visiting Rockhampton may be surprised to discover a little piece of wizarding magic waiting inside Archer Park Rail Museum.

Engine No. 988, proudly displayed at the heritage rail museum, once spent time disguised as the famous Hogwarts Express during Harry Potter promotions at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast. Painted bright red and transformed into a magical movie attraction, the historic Queensland steam locomotive delighted fans as a replica of the train made famous by the Harry Potter films.

Today, the locomotive has been lovingly restored to its original “Brown Bomber” colours and now calls Rockhampton home, making it a must-see for both railway enthusiasts and young witches and wizards alike.

Built in 1952, No. 988 is one of Queensland Railways’ iconic C17 class locomotives, once used across regional Queensland carrying passengers and freight throughout the state.

While the real Hogwarts Express from the films was filmed in Scotland using a different locomotive entirely, No. 988 still has a magical story of its own.

Time Safaris Walking Tours owner Phil Hore said Rockhampton is filled with fascinating stories waiting to be uncovered.

“Rockhampton has so many hidden stories and surprising connections to history and popular culture,” Phil said.

“To have a genuine Queensland steam locomotive that once played the role of the Hogwarts Express is something families and Harry Potter fans absolutely love discovering.”

Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll said attractions like Archer Park help bring the region’s stories to life for visitors of all ages.

“The destination is full of unique experiences that spark curiosity and imagination,” Mary said.

“This is one of those wonderful stories where local heritage meets a little movie magic, and it creates such a fun experience for families visiting the region.”

Visitors to Archer Park Rail Museum can see the locomotive up close, discover Rockhampton’s railway history and snap a photo beside the former “Hogwarts Express” right in the heart of the city.
