Young volunteer turning passion into a future career at Capricorn Coast Visitor Information Centre

At just 16 years of age, Yeppoon local Lily MacAndrews is already proving that passion, initiative and community spirit can open doors to exciting career opportunities.

Currently in Year 11 at Rockhampton Grammar School, Lily is balancing full-time study with an online Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management through TAFE, while also volunteering at the Capricorn Coast Visitor Information Centre in Yeppoon to gain valuable hands-on industry experience.

The proactive young entrepreneur is not only preparing for a future career in tourism, but also runs two small businesses, Lily’s Rings N Things and Sugar & Blossom Bakery, creating jewellery and baked goods which she sells at markets throughout Yeppoon, Rockhampton, Emu Park and Byfield.

Lily said volunteering at the Visitor Information Centre had provided invaluable real-world experience and helped strengthen her confidence.

“Volunteering at the Visitor Information Centre has been a great opportunity for me to broaden my skills in customer service, communication and booking management,” Lily said. “I first heard about the centre through one of my mum’s friends, who spoke highly of the wonderful staff and how supportive they would be.”

“Since starting, I’ve helped open the store, book ferry tickets and provide recommendations for accommodation and activities throughout the Capricorn Coast region. My favourite part has been connecting with locals and hearing stories from travellers visiting our region.”

“Working here has built my confidence by exposing me to new people and helping me develop connections. It has given me a real insight into the tourism industry and confirmed that a career as a flight attendant or travel agent is something I would love to pursue.”

Lily said volunteering had been an important part of her life, having also supported Calvary Church Kids Ministry and women’s empowerment events in Rockhampton.

“Volunteering demonstrates initiative, motivation and responsibility, while also building transferable skills like communication and teamwork,” Lily said. “I would encourage other young people to give volunteering a go, as it provides great experience and creates stepping stones towards a future career.”

Capricorn Enterprise Chief Executive Officer Mary Carroll said Lily’s enthusiasm and initiative demonstrated the important role volunteering could play in helping young people develop practical skills and discover career pathways.

“We are incredibly proud to have Lily as part of our Visitor Information Centre team,” Mary said.

“Her willingness to balance school, tertiary study, volunteering and entrepreneurship at such a young age is truly inspiring.”

“The Visitor Information Centre provides a fantastic environment for young people to develop confidence, communication skills and a deeper understanding of the tourism industry, all while becoming ambassadors for their own region.”

“Lily’s story highlights that volunteering is not only about giving back to the community, but also about gaining experience, building networks and creating pathways into rewarding careers.”

“We hope her example encourages more young people to discover the opportunities available right here on the Capricorn Coast.”

As one of the region’s first points of contact for visitors, the Capricorn Coast Visitor Information Centre welcomes thousands of travellers each year, with volunteers playing a vital role in sharing local knowledge and creating memorable experiences for guests from around Australia and the world.
