Tourism Australia, Austrade and State and Territory Tourism Organisations have released an overview of the European Union’s Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive, to support the Australian tourism industry prepare for the upcoming changes. The Directive introduces new requirements for environmental and social claims made to consumers, with its rules starting from 27 September 2026.
The EU rules are prescriptive in several key areas that may differ to the Australian requirements, including sustainability labelling, and claims about carbon neutrality and future performance. The Overview is designed to help businesses understand the changes and review their marketing and communications with confidence.
