Rockhampton was buzzing this week, with the Hon Tim Mander, Minister for Sport and Racing, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Mr Andrew Liveris AO, President of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee, Olympic Cycling Track Champion Anna Meares and Track and Field Paralympian Angie Ballard, visiting the city as part of the Discovery of the Emblem promotion, revealing one of six pieces of the emblem, prior to the big reveal in Brisbane next Monday 4th October. The tour commenced in Cairns, continuing to Townsville, Rockhampton (today Thurs 1st Oct), Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
As one of Queensland’s Olympic and Paralympic host cities, CQ32 Legacy Rowing Advisory Committee, chaired by Member for Rockhampton Donna Kirkland hosted dinner at Sin, Sweat and Sorrow on Wednesday (30/9) evening, along with our elected representatives and Committee Members including Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll. Andrew Liveris spoke of fond memories visiting Rocky, Yeppoon and Great Keppel Island in the seventies, and he was most impressed with his visit to the Rowing and Canoeing course on the Fitzroy River. Mr Liveris spoke of the generational opportunities for our communities to benefit from legacy projects that this largest sporting event in the globe will bring to our destinations. On Thursday morning (1/10), Channel 9’s Today Show (and former Rocky journalist Jess Dry), was joined by local school athletes for live TV crosses, who were asked to guess what they think the Emblem will be. The media doorstop afterwards with visiting VIPS and our local State and Local elected representatives also posed the same question with answers from barramundi to flowers, sunshine to frilly necked lizard – I guess we’ll all find out next Monday 4th October!
