The Singapore Armed Forces’ annual Exercise Wallaby has reached its halfway point, with training progressing well across Central Queensland. Now in its 36th year, the exercise has brought thousands of Singaporean military personnel and equipment to the region for three months of training. Exercise Commander Colonel Shaun Andrew Michael highlighted Central Queensland’s extensive training areas and established defence facilities as key reasons the region continues to host this significant annual exercise.
To put the scale of the exercise into perspective, Exercise Wallaby 2025 involved more than 5,000 military personnel and 500 military platforms. Held at Shoalwater Bay Training Area, the 35th edition featured three phases of training involving fighter aircraft, helicopters, armoured vehicles and live-firing operations. More than 20 new technology applications, including artificial intelligence, robotics and counter-drone systems, were also utilised.
Beyond its military significance, Exercise Wallaby presents valuable economic opportunities for the Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast region, with the large-scale exercise creating demand for services such as fuel, catering, transport and accommodation. The presence of visiting military personnel also provides opportunities for local tourism, hospitality and retail businesses.
