Shoalwater Bay Defence Projects a Major Impetus for Regional Business

Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area Remediation Project

April 30th 2018 will long be acknowledged as a significant date for local industry with the announcement by Federal Defence Minister The Hon Marise Payne MP that the Shoalwater Bay Remediation Project (>$130M) will contain a minimum local content component (Rockhampton and Livingstone LGAs) of eighty per cent (80%) of the capital infrastructure spend.

Immediately following this announcement Capricorn Enterprise commenced liaison with the appointed Remediation Project Tier 1 Contractors, Downer/FKG (joint venture), providing support and business/industry introductions to ensure that a comprehensive matrix demonstrating local industry capability is assembled for the project.

Acknowledging that the Remediation Project is a design and construct contract, with a 2.5 year completion timeframe, Capricorn Enterprise is working closely with local industry to guide their involvement in Defence projects.  Capricorn Enterprise Economic Development Manager Neil Lethlean has confirmed that the first stage of their industry support strategy will commence mid May via the involvement of the Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC) who will be conducting a series of one-on-one mentoring sessions with a selection of larger construction, civil, manufacturing and specialist consulting firms keen to engage in commonwealth and defence projects. This mentoring program will continue in association with Downer/FKG.
