Visitor Centre Volunteers Celebrated – Thank You!

This National Volunteers Week Capricorn Enterprise’s 51 wonderful volunteers will be guests of honour at thank you breakfasts in recognition of their invaluable contribution to the local community in welcoming visitors to the region 7 days a week.

Like many not for profit businesses around Australia, Capricorn Enterprise relies on the services of volunteers to staff 2 Accredited Visitor Information Centres on behalf of Rockhampton Regional Council and Livingstone Shire Council. The centres are open 363 days a year, and without volunteers this community service would be unaffordable. CEO Mary Carroll said, “Visitor information centres throughout the state and nation cost between $100,000 and $300,000 to operate annually. Without the support of our wonderful volunteers, the real cost of staffing an information centre seven days a week would be exorbitant. We can’t thank them all enough.“

The theme for National Volunteer Week 2015 is Give Happy, Live Happy. More than 6 million Australian volunteers give happiness to others each year. Maureen Caunt (pictured left) is a prime example of the positive effects that volunteering can have. When asked why she decided to volunteer at a visitor centre, Maureen responded, “I really wanted to do something for the community, and I really enjoy meeting new people and working with fellow volunteers. What I love most about volunteering at the Spire Visitor Information Centre is sharing my knowledge of the Rockhampton and Capricorn Region with visitors.”

Mary Carroll said, “This National Volunteer Week, we’re not only thanking our current volunteers, but we’re asking other locals with a passion for the region to help us make Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast, the happiest places on earth. Just a few hours of volunteer work makes a difference in happiness and mood, plus helps us share the wonders of our beautiful region with visitors.”
