While COVID has quashed the ability for those south of the Queensland border to spend time exploring our beautiful Southern Great Barrier Reef, the Queensland-based team from Sydney Weekender have spent four (4) days filming on the Capricorn Coast and 18 Islands of Keppel Bay, enticing NSW and ACT audiences to keep the dream alive for when borders reopen.
These tv shows are commissioned, with Capricorn Enterprise negotiating an entire half an hour Capricorn Coast, SGBR special which grew from a two story beginning – the Producer and crew were so impressed with the destination, they have slotted in this half hour show to air on Sunday 10th October at 5.30pm on Channel 7. Social and website promotion are included in the package, with on-line viewing available to audiences outside of NSW.
After checking into Echelon Apartments in Yeppoon and absorbing the incredible view from their balcony, presenter Candice Dixon and the Sydney Weekender crew visited the Yeppoon lagoon and foreshore, taking in the ‘vibe’ of the street art, live music and gorgeous boutiques in the seaside tourist town.
With our fabulous foodie culture on show, the crew indulged in lunch at the Keppel Bay Marina where they spoke with Executive Chef, Matt Smith and learned about the complete paddock to plate experience available from Banana Station Beef to the Waterline Restaurant.
Keeping with the locavore concept, the crew then spent time with Ross O’Reilly from High Valley Dawn Permaculture Farm before enjoying dinner at Beaches Restaurant.
Day two saw the crew on board Keppel Charters to the eco-friendly and gorgeous Pumpkin Island where they discovered the perfect place to host a special bespoke celebration with some local friends. The team then topped off the perfect day off with a waterfront dining experience at Vue Wine Bar & Restaurant back in Yeppoon.
Unable to wait to get back on the water to Keppel Bay’s island paradise smorgasbord, the Sydney Weekender crew found Scotty from Keppel Explorer and took off on the 12-seater speed boat. Zipping around the 18 Keppel Islands and 50 white sandy beaches, the crew discovered the geological, European and indigenous history of Great Keppel Island, along with gaining a sneak peak of the national park islands and their miraculous island caves. After a day of sea spray and ocean ‘donuts’, the crew offboarded at Great Keppel Island where they were greeted by staff of Great Keppel Island Hideaway.
After visiting the lookouts and checking out some local hotspots of the island, the day finished overlooking the Southern Great Barrier Reef with sunset drinks and canapes, as the crew delighted in the stunning views before heading back to the mainland on board Keppel Konnections.
On their final day, Sydney Weekender took a tour of Koorana Crocodile Farm where they got up close and personal with some of our prehistoric beasts and learning more about Taste Capricorn Coast’s marvellous food adventure.
They then explored Shell World Yeppoon next to the Capricorn Coast Visitor Information Centre in Yeppoon, before heading up to the spectacular Capricorn Caves.
Sydney Weekender is a travel and lifestyle program that airs weekly on Channel 7 & PRIME TV on Sunday at 5.30pm. It is repeated nationally on 7TWO. Facebook, Instagram and website promos also included.
