Tearing down its doors to the public this week just in time for the April school holidays, the 5-acre development, located adjacent to Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary in Woodbury, is set to be one of the destination’s most exhilarating new tourism attractions.
Adding a one kilometre fully accessible walking trail and dinosaur fossil dig to the already established Capricorn Dinosaur Mini Golf, the Capricorn Dinosaur Park is now complete and welcoming all ages and abilities to immerse themselves among the realistic prehistoric backdrop.
With thanks to Queensland Government’s Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund, the $800,000 project has been years in the making, and Capricorn Dinosaur Park’s Kieron Smedley is thrilled to deliver this world class experience that will further add to the established attractions already on offer in the area.
“We are so proud to now combine our three unique experiences in one spot including Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary, Capricorn Dinosaur Mini Golf and Capricorn Dinosaur Park,” Kieron said.
“In 2023, we are celebrating the 50th birthday of Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary, so we believe to double the attraction size on the property this year, is a massive achievement for both our family and the entire Capricorn Coast community.”
The Capricorn Dinosaur Park will be the first private major tourism attraction built in Central Queensland for more than 30 years.
The extensive development received funding through the $25 million Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund, which enabled the fast-tracking of new and enhanced tourism experiences across the state.
Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the Palaszczuk Government continued to support Central Queensland tourism operators to grow.
“We know everybody loves dinosaurs,” Ms Lauga said.
“And the Capricorn Dinosaur Park delivers a visitor experience for our region that’s set to become a family favorite destination for many years to come.
“We’ve backed the Capricorn Dinosaur Park with almost $800,000 from the Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund because of this wonderful experience’s potential for growth.
“The Capricorn Dinosaur Park is predicted to encourage an extra 20,000 holidaymaker to enjoy more of our region’s great lifestyle, generating $2.28 million for our visitor economy.”
Livingstone Shire Council Mayor Andy Ireland has proactively supported the project since inception, acknowledging that the addition of a new landmark attraction for the destination will increase visitation and provide a world-class offering for visitors and locals.
“Council is pleased to have been able to assist with the development of this wonderful new attraction and would like to congratulate the Smedley family for their achievement and thank them for the confidence they have shown in our region by their continued investment,” Mayor Ireland said.
Capricorn Enterprise CEO, Mary Carroll extends her congratulations to Kieron and the team at Capricorn Dinosaur Park for delivering the fresh new experience that will further complement our strong and growing destination.
“Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary has been a drawcard for our destination for 50 years now, and we are absolutely thrilled to see the Capricorn Dinosaur Park take its final step forward and open to the public,” Mary said.
“Bringing the prehistoric era to modern day, Capricorn Dinosaur Park joins Winton’s Age of Dinosaur Museum, Opalton’s Lark Quarry, Boulia’s Stone House Museum, and our destination’s iconic Capricorn Caves, along the Dig the Tropic Geo-Tourism Trail, a themed journey linking the wonders of the Southern Great Barrier Reef with the mysteries of Queensland’s Outback.”
