Plastic Free July 23, that’s a wrap!
Posted on August 1st, 2023
For three weeks during Plastic Free July, Jo, Coordinator of PFCQ with the team at Lure Living Yeppoon, worked towards zero single-use coffee cups and lids. The Reusable Cup program based on it takes 21 days to create a habit. Working with Community and local businesses promoting reusable cups over single-use plastic cups and lids sees a reduction in single-use plastic cups and lids. Single-use was reduced by 20% by engaging with this program and embedding new behaviours.
Not only does this reduce waste and litter in our local communities, but saves small businesses $$$ and time which costs money when having to order and stock single-use options. Cafes implement alternatives for Communities to engage with Mug Libraries and borrow cup systems. These systems allow you to avoid single-use plastic cups and lids when you forget you’re reusable cup!
Myth buster:
- Single-use cups do not keep your coffee hotter than a reusable or dine-in cup.
If you dine in with single-use cups when other options are available, you are part of the problem, not the solution. If you can’t finish your coffee and need to take it with you, that’s a behaviour change, that you need to make. It’s as simple as ordering a smaller dine-in coffee. Most of what we do is our behaviour that needs to change. Businesses are supplying communities with options to reduce single-use plastic, a win for businesses, the community and the environment.
FACTS:
- Many businesses provide a discount when you BYO your reusable cup.
- Order on an app? No problems, select “KEEP CUP”, hand your cup to your barista when you arrive or leave one there and swap and go when you collect.
We salute Lure Living for engaging with this program and embedding these behaviour changes from single-use to reusable into their daily grind and immediate coffee community.
We also salute the leaders who engage daily with their reusable cups and encourage everyone in our Communities to say no to single-use plastic coffee cups and lids; there is no excuse for single-use plastic.
