Exploring the Evolution of Beef Australia Through the Wilson Family’s Journey

As Beef Australia gears up for its grand celebration in Rockhampton, Capricorn Enterprise takes a stroll down memory lane with Richard and Libbie Wilson of Keppel Bay Marina, reflecting on the evolution of Rockhampton’s renowned EXPO since its inception in 1988.

Libbie Wilson, an active member of the Beef 88 Social Committee, alongside a team of capable women, dedicated herself to organizing the social aspects, functions, and catering for the entire Beef event. This included orchestrating the inaugural Gala Beef Ball, held at the Shopping Fair (now Stockland). Additionally, the Social Committee launched Beef 88 sticker promotions in 56 Rockhampton area restaurants, introduced the first Picnic in the Park at the Botanical Gardens, and spearheaded AMLC Special Beef promotions at the International Conference hosted at the Pilbeam Theatre.

Meanwhile, Richard Wilson, serving on the Expo 88 Beef Committee, played a pivotal role in the decision to hold the event in Rockhampton, the Beef Capital, a decision that continues to yield immense success.

The Wilson family’s Banana Station Beef has been a consistent presence at all 12 previous Beef Week events, showcasing live cattle, beef carcasses, and stud Brahmans. In recent years, they have also supported the Led Steers team exhibited by Rockhampton Grammar students.

Before the inception of Beef Australia in 1988, Richard chaired the Rockhampton Cattle Club in 1972, eventually passing the torch to his wife Libbie. Richard was instrumental in the construction of the Rockhampton Cattle Club in the same year. Libbie, taking the reins in the 1980s for Beef 88, was succeeded by the late Graeme Acton and then his brother, the late Alan Acton.

The Wilson family, owners of the iconic Keppel Bay Marina, home to the delectable Waterline Restaurant featuring their own Banana Station Beef, has seen multiple generations carry on their legacy. Kylie and Matt Smith, now part of the Wilson family, have garnered nine awards across three Beef Week celebrations, including three-time A la Carte Signature Dish Winners, a testament to their dedication to quality.

In 2018, Banana Station Beef clinched the Junior Champion Brahman Bull title, with Banana Station Manly 69 and Champion Pen of Grainfed Steers also earning accolades.

Through their steadfast commitment and contributions, the Wilson family has left an indelible mark on the evolution of Beef Australia and the Beef industry as a whole, of which we, at Capricorn Enterprise are incredibly grateful for.
