Capricorn Coast’s Max Allen Jnr represents at exclusive Master Reef Guide Biodiversity Masterclass

Max Allen Jnr, owner and skipper of Freedom Fast Cats, recently represented the Capricorn Coast at the prestigious Master Reef Guide Biodiversity Masterclass held in Airlie Beach.

Max is currently the only accredited Master Reef Guide (MRG) in the Capricorn Coast region and continues to lead the way in reef education, conservation, and visitor engagement across the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

The Master Reef Guide Biodiversity Masterclass was delivered to build capacity among MRGs and their respective operators to conduct fish and coral biodiversity assessments at high-value tourism sites.

This training not only provides critical biodiversity data to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (Reef Authority) but also forms the foundation of the Master Reef Guides’ interpretation for their guests.

During the masterclass, Max and his fellow MRGs conducted biodiversity assessments at Butterfly Bay on Hook Island, travelling onboard Ocean Rafting.

Over the three-day workshop, these industry leaders collectively recorded 831 observations covering 206 species – an impressive showcase of industry collaboration and the incredible biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef.

“This Masterclass was a fantastic opportunity to not only deepen our knowledge of reef biodiversity but to contribute directly to the data that helps protect it,” Max said.

“I’m excited to bring this knowledge back to the Capricorn Coast and share it with our guests through meaningful, educational experiences on the water.”

The Master Reef Guides program – a partnership between the Reef Authority, the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators (AMPTO), and Tourism and Events Queensland – empowers select tourism professionals with advanced training in reef interpretation, science communication, and conservation leadership.

Freedom Fast Cats, a long-standing and eco-certified operator in the region, provides glass-bottom boat tours, island transfers, and reef interpretation experiences that allow visitors to explore Keppel Bay in an immersive and sustainable way.

Max’s involvement in the Master Reef Guide program ensures guests receive world-class insights into the marine ecosystems that make this region so special.

Mary Carroll, CEO of Capricorn Enterprise, praised Max’s ongoing leadership.

“Max is not only an ambassador for the Great Barrier Reef, but also for the Capricorn Coast,” Mary said.

“His participation in this biodiversity Masterclass further strengthens our region’s reputation as a hub for sustainable tourism and meaningful reef experiences.”

As Max returns to local waters, he does so with enhanced skills, tools, and passion – ready to educate and inspire more visitors, helping connect people from across the globe with the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.
