Thank you to everyone who joined our recent Ecotourism Workshop, held 12th August at the Keppel Bay Sailing Club. With attendees from the tourism industry, ECO certified operators, community and environment groups, first nations representatives, elected Councillors and government sectors, the day was a powerful step forward for the Capricorn Coast’s continuation as an ECO Certified Destination with Ecotourism Australia thanks to the strong collaboration and leadership between Capricorn Enterprise and Livingstone Shire Council.
Key discussions focused on the 2024 audit results and actions including waste reduction; EV infrastructure; reducing emissions; protecting our natural landscapes, waterways and beaches; regenerative farming and agritourism; and opportunities to deepen our sustainable practices. Additional resources for businesses, increased community education, strengthened partnerships and collective consensus on a sustainable future were key takeaways from the two hour session.
The session included an inspiring keynote from Dr Mireia Guix, Lecturer in Sustainable Tourism and Corporate Social Responsibility at The University of Queensland Business School.
Dr Guix has worked on global sustainability projects with the United Nations, European Union, and Inter-American Development Bank, and is a leading voice in regenerative tourism, social impact measurement, and decarbonisation strategies. Her presentation provided practical, evidence-based direction for how destinations like ours can lead with purpose.
We sincerely thank all attendees for your continued commitment. If you’re a tourism operator interested in starting your own ecotourism journey, we’d love to hear from you. There are free tools and resources available to help you get started — just reach out.
