Capricorn Enterprise notes the recent announcement that the $23 million in Federal Government funding for the proposed Rocky Stadium project will no longer proceed.
The funding, originally approved in 2020 under the former Coalition Government, was intended to support the development of the Rocky Sports Club precinct in Rockhampton. A $250,000 federally funded feasibility study by Populus in 2013/14 reviewed 10 sites across the region and recommended the Rocky Sports Club as the best site. The project aimed to expand local sporting infrastructure to benefit more than 120 sporting clubs and community organisations across the region.
Since the project’s inception, Capricorn Enterprise has been a strong advocate for the development of a regional stadium facility in Rockhampton as a transformational piece of sporting and community infrastructure.
Delays due to COVID-19 and other external factors meant that the project timeline was extended. In October 2025, it was confirmed that the current Federal Government has withdrawn the funding allocation.
The proposed facility was expected to deliver local employment opportunities during construction and operation, provide upgraded amenities for athletes and spectators, and strengthen Rockhampton’s position as a regional sporting and events hub in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Capricorn Enterprise had previously welcomed the project as an important investment in regional infrastructure and a boost for the local economy. While the loss of funding is disappointing, the organisation remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance Central Queensland’s capacity to host major sporting and community events.
Capricorn Enterprise will continue to work with government, industry, and community partners to advocate for future investment in infrastructure that supports regional growth and economic diversification.
