Ancient species, new generation: new life emerges at Koorana Crocodile Farm

The newest residents of the Capricorn Coast are beginning to emerge, with freshly hatched saltwater crocodiles now arriving at Koorana Crocodile Farm.

Visitors to the working crocodile farm can experience the excitement of hatchling season and even hold a juvenile crocodile as part of the farm’s guided tour experience.

Each clutch of hatchlings is carefully relocated to specially prepared nursery pens designed to mimic natural conditions. These enclosures provide shallow water for swimming, raised areas to rest out of the water, and shaded spaces where the young crocodiles can hide and feel secure as they adjust to their new environment.

While newly hatched crocodiles are immediately capable swimmers, they don’t need to feed straight away. Hatchlings are born with a nutrient-rich yolk sac that sustains them for their first weeks of life, meaning their appetite only develops several days after emerging from the egg.

According to John Lever at Koorana Crocodile Farm, hatchling season is one of the most fascinating times of year for visitors.

“Seeing these tiny crocodiles hatch is always a special experience,” John said.

“Guests are often surprised at how active they are from the moment they emerge. Even though they’re only small, they already have the instincts of a crocodile – swimming, exploring and learning very quickly how to survive.”

CEO of Capricorn Enterprise, Mary Carroll, said the experience is a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with one of Australia’s most iconic species.

“The Capricorn Coast is known for offering authentic wildlife experiences, and this is a fantastic example,” Mary said.

“Koorana Crocodile Farm allows visitors to learn about crocodiles in a working farm environment and even hold a juvenile croc – it’s a memorable experience that families absolutely love.”

Visitors touring the farm during this period have the chance to learn about the life cycle of Australia’s iconic saltwater crocodile.

Koorana Crocodile Farm welcomes guests daily with guided experiences that bring them up close to these remarkable reptiles. Admission includes the guided tour and the chance to safely hold a juvenile crocodile under staff supervision. The farm is open seven days a week (closed Christmas Day).

Bookings can be made online at koorana.com.au.

Hatchling season offers visitors a rare glimpse into the earliest stage of a crocodile’s life – a small but powerful reminder of one of nature’s oldest children.
