Capricorn Caves officially opened Stage One of its new Accessible Walkway this week, celebrating the milestone with invited guests who gathered at the site on Tuesday afternoon.
The new walkway marks a significant step forward in making the iconic natural attraction more inclusive, improving access to the caves’ remarkable geological and cultural features for visitors who use mobility aids or have other accessibility needs.
The project was delivered with support from the Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund – Access Project Government Grant, part of Queensland’s 2023 Year of Accessible Tourism. The program aims to elevate accessible tourism experiences across the state while preparing the industry for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Constructed by Walkabout Welding Pty Ltd, the accessible pathway has been designed to allow more visitors to safely and comfortably explore areas of the cave precinct that were previously difficult to access.
Director of Capricorn Caves, John Augusteyn, said the project reflects the team’s ongoing commitment to welcoming all visitors.
“This milestone reflects our ongoing dedication to making the wonder of Capricorn Caves available to everyone,” Mr Augusteyn said.
“Accessibility is at the heart of our visitor experience, and we’re excited to continue developing this pathway for all our guests.”
The official opening was attended by several community and government representatives, including Nigel Hutton MP, Member for Keppel, Ariana Doolan MP, Member for Pumicestone, accessibility advocate Patricia Marsh, and members of the local tourism industry.
Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll congratulated the Capricorn Caves team on reaching this important milestone.
“Capricorn Caves new accessible walkway is another meaningful step toward ensuring the region continues to provide welcoming and inclusive tourism experiences for visitors of all abilities.”
Future stages of the Accessible Walkway are planned to further expand access throughout the cave system, continuing to enhance the visitor experience while preserving one of Central Queensland’s most unique natural attractions.
