- The Queensland Government has announced a new Queensland Housing Code and updated Modern Homes Standards to simplify residential building requirements and support faster housing delivery.
- The new Housing Code introduces consistent design and siting rules for detached houses and secondary dwellings, replacing provisions that have remained largely unchanged for more than 15 years.
- Updates to the Modern Homes Standards provide greater flexibility for energy efficiency, accessibility and traditional Queensland-style homes, while aiming to reduce unnecessary construction costs.
- The Housing Code will be available for local councils to adopt from 1 September 2026 during a three-year transition period, with the Modern Homes Standards amendments proposed to commence on 14 August 2026.
- The reforms are intended to reduce red tape, improve consistency across Queensland and support increased housing supply.
