Visitors, community groups and local organisations will soon enjoy a new way to explore the spectacular bays and beaches of the Keppel Bay Islands, with GKI Boat Hire officially launching next week.
The new venture fills a long-identified gap in the market for small, stable no-licence-required boats that allow people to safely and independently access more of the island’s shoreline.
Owner-operator Theo George brings deep local knowledge to the new business, having spent the past eight years working at Great Keppel Island Holiday Village alongside island stalwart Geoff Mercer.
His experience supporting guests, operators and island logistics helped shape the idea for a product that gives people more freedom and flexibility on the water.
“After years of helping visitors navigate the island, it became clear that many people wanted an option between a full-scale charter and a rigid ferry service,” Theo said. “Our boats are simple to operate and perfect for accessing those quieter bays or setting up snorkelling, research or community activities.”
“It opens up more of the island in a safe, responsible way.”
Designed with ease of use, safety and versatility in mind, GKI Boat Hire offers a fleet suited to day-trippers, families, volunteer groups, environmental researchers and local organisations who need reliable on-water access without the constraints of scheduled transport.
Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll said the new business is a welcome addition to the region’s expanding marine-tourism offering.
“We’re delighted to see GKI Boat Hire launch on the island and our Capricorn Coast region,” Mary said. “Theo’s long connection with the island community, coupled with a clear understanding of visitor needs, has shaped a product that truly strengthens our destination.”
“Small, purpose-built ventures like this help us grow responsibly while giving visitors more ways to connect with the Southern Great Barrier Reef.”
Bookings for GKI Boat Hire are now live online, with strong interest expected across the summer season.
