Local sculptures snaps up a bronze at Australian Street Art Awards

Twenty-nine public art experiences have been recognised as the best in the country for art-loving visitors at the Australian Street Art Awards, with the Capricorn Coast’s newest sculptures taking out a bronze award in the ‘Best Landmark Sculpture’ category.
Brendon Tohill’s ‘Let’s Get Crabby, in a Big Way’ popped up on Lammermoor’s shared pathway at the end of 2022, with a number of soldier crabs creating the quirky and unique art statement.
The Awards showcase the ultimate Australian destinations where visitors can see epic, world-class street and public art that’s accessible and enjoyable all year round.
‘Let’s Get Crabby’ joins a growing list of award-winning street art from across the destination.

Best Street Art Experiences in Oz Revealed Twenty-nine public art experiences have been recognised as the best in the country for art-loving visitors at the Australian Street Art Awards, announced last night (Friday) from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The Gold Award winners of the 2022 Australian Street Art Awards, a Tourism Awards for Public Art program, include a nightly light show spectacular in the Flinders Ranges, a memorial to the bravery witnessed at one of Australia’s deadliest train disasters, and a country street art trail created by homegrown volunteers. Heading the list was ‘DYIPNI – Da King of Da Road’, a tractor that has been transformed into a vibrant tribute by 14 Filipino emigrants living in WA’s agricultural heartland. It was announced as the Best of the Best winner after taking out Gold in the Best Landmark Sculpture category earlier in the evening. The Awards presentation included the announcement of the recipient of the second annual Outstanding Contribution to Australian Art Tourism Award. Granted to a person who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to transform one or more destinations through outdoor art. The 2022 recipient is Cindi Drennan, Founder and Artistic Director of Illuminart, a creative company that integrates community engagement within high quality projection arts, architectural projection and audio-visual storytelling experiences. One of Illuminart’s projects, the Quorn Silo Light Show, picked up the Gold Award for Best Mega Mural this year. It is a free nightly spectacular which features animated stories about the surrounding Flinders Ranges’ history, wildlife and culture.
